Not one to play by the rules, Naumi commissioned graffiti artist Tr853-1 (Trase Oner) to bring the hotel’s façade to life. As one of the pioneers of the local street art movement, Tr853-1 explores the relationship and sometimes tension between artist and medium. Working in traditionally restricted spaces, Tr853-1 works with the idea of breaking away from convention. The exclusive spray painted four-story high mural, illustrates a 6-foot policeman pulling up a bright red, wheel clamped sports car. Reflective of the vigilant traffic wardens in the area, who ensure no one gets away with parking illegally along the (nearby) intersection. Tr853-1 piece is a stark contrast to the cascading vines of the Naumi entrance, much like Singapore a city of metamorphosis, Naumi is about blending the unexpected and seeing what awaits on the other side.
Aiman
A vibrant, smiling woman greets you come morning, afternoon and night when you walk long the Naumi Singapore lobby. The pixelated collage is made from three thousand short videos that play with the ideas of reflection and memory. The Day You Told Me A Story, created by one of Singapore’s most decorated, contemporary artists Aiman shifts with the day. Together the videos create the smiling woman, who reflects on her day which starts at 6am. An elderly group doing their morning tai chi, a woman walking her dog, the madness of morning rush hour and Aiman himself on his morning jog. At noon the woman’s day transforms, pushing her into the afternoon rush of living in a bustling city where work and leisure too often blur. Come 7pm the installation deepens into an indigo and rose scene percolated by Singapore’s night lights and familiar sights. The compilation of ordinary, daily scenes set to colour evokes a sense of nostalgia for visitors passing by to appreciate the nuances in everyday life.
Olivier Henry
Feel your energy rise as you venture up and down the Naumi hallways with Chakra inspired artwork from award-winning French photographer Olivier Henry. Playing with the idea of vibration and colour, Henry uses the illusion of movement in his prints on each floor of the hotel and within our Habitat rooms (/hyperlink to rooms). Movement is heightened by the vibrational, layered quality of the images achieved through lenticular printing. Lenticular lenses are used to produce printed images with the illusion of depth, or the ability to change or move when the image is viewed from different angles. Henry pushes this motion further with high contrast colours depicting a dancing woman that sets the tone as you move through each floor of the hotel.
