An eclectic new boutique hotel has opened its doors in the Cuba Street precinct, showcasing the work of local artists and designers. After an extensive renovation, Naumi Studio Hotel Wellington has taken over the landmark Edwardian-style building at 213 Cuba Street — originally one of many People’s Palace hotels that were built by the Salvation Army.

The 116-room hotel is the fourth property to arrive from Singapore-based private hospitality label Naumi in New Zealand. And like its sister properties, the Wellington outpost is an absolute feast for the eyes, with bold spaces “inspired from seafaring, the literary world and an enduring love.”

Entering through Dunlop Street, guests will see the work of several New Zealand artists and designers. A large-scale floral backdrop in the reception area was created by Art Dep’t NZ and is completely covered in gold leaf. Underfoot the botanical theme is brought to life by rugs from painter Karl Maughan, while the lobby features a larger than life floral sculpture from light artist Angus Muir. Elsewhere, the colour bomb continues through a pastel green parlour and a lounge area filled with seating and surrounded by the books.

Guests have six room types to choose from, ranging from cosy studios to a heavily furnished executive suite. The rooms also come with the flair of contemporary design, each painted in one of four colourways, and feature 3D ‘squiggle’ artworks, marble counters and Ralph Lauren wallpaper.
